Uses
Miners Lamps (Carbide Lamps): In these lamps, water would drip onto the carbide causing a strong reaction. The product of the two reactants is acetylene gas which is highly flammable and easily ignited. However, this type of flammable gas was very dangerous in coal mines, so it was mainly used in tin and copper mines.
Head Lights: The same idea of miners lamps was used in the headlights of early cars.
Fruit Ripening: The acetylene gas produced from calcium carbide and water is a fruit ripening agent.
